Annotation
The research of book clubs’ goals and the results of their activity in Russia and abroad is up-to-date due to the fact that these aspects have not been analysed and generalized so far for various types of book clubs in different countries. An attempt at it provides an opportunity for studying book clubs as a learning tool. In connection with this, the article is supposed to reveal differences and similarities in the understanding of goals and results of the activity of book clubs for people of different ages both in Russia and in English-speaking countries. During the research process the contents of public Russian and English sources were analysed and Russian book clubs moderators were interviewed. The article reveals goals and results of the activity of book clubs in Russia and abroad. The goals are mostly associated with providing club members with an opportunity not only to read and discuss books of their interest but also to socialize and discuss various topics in psychologically friendly environment as well as to get a stimulus for personal development. Among the results the most significant ones include the development of members’ communication skills, an increased interest in books and reading and a broadened outlook. The materials presented in the article allow considering the learning potential of book clubs and the perspectives of using them as a learning tool for the development of various aspects of functional literacy.
