Annotation

The relevance of this study is substantiated by larger numbers of families who choose a strategy of schooling outside of public educational organisations for their children. This trend is connected with the global crisis of school education, the impact of urbanisation, increased accessibility of digital learning tools and online educational services, availability of online and in-person attestation in licensed organisations, as well as the change in the workstyle of parents — downshifting, digital nomading, high educational attainment of parents, etc. The main research methods were analysis, synthesis, generalisation, and comparison for literature review, aggregation of data on alternative educational organisations, cross-disciplinary theoretical analysis, comparative method, systematization and conceptualization of scientific ideas, generalisation and interpretation of the research results. This enabled the researchers to identify the key stages of alternative education development and its specifics in big cities of Russia. The research sample comprised such big cities as Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Ekaterinburg, Kazan, Novosibirsk, according to the 2020 State Population Census. As the result of the research, a data base of 506 alternative educational organisations was collected and analysed. Based on the analysis of this data, the authors conclude that alternative school education in big cities of Russia is heterogeneous and eclectic. The formats of alternative school education are quite diverse: from students being isolated at home (“school orphanage”) to family classes organised by parents for particular groups of children, family or private schools that follow different pedagogical concepts, from customized in-person education to different combinations of blended learning or fulltime online learning. The main discussion issue of the study is the role of alternative education in the development of the new educational paradigm.
