ACADEMIC PODCASTING: A MODEL OF A POPULAR SCIENCE PODCAST

Annotation

This paper presents the results of the study of academic podcasting aimed at developing a model of a popular science podcast and creating a university-based podcast about science and scientists. The authors of the study conducted a literary review of Russian and international literature on podcasts, defined the term ‘podcast’ and its derivatives, identified special aspects of the communicative genre of a podcast and the corresponding communicative strategies; developed a questionnaire to conduct a survey of target audience, collected and analyzed the respondents’ answers. As the result of the research, a portrait of the target audience was developed, and a model of a popular science podcast was created. The target audience actively uses podcasts for obtaining science-related information. The portrait of the audience includes mostly women aged from 20 to 40, with higher education and majoring in the Humanities. They are either students of graduate programmes or employees of educational institutions working as specialists or leading specialists. They can be either married or not, usually without children, and belong to the middle-class. The study confirmed the hypothesis that video podcasting is an efficient tool for science promotion in the media. The key components of the model of a popular science podcast include a relevant topic, a charismatic host, a well-thought structure, involving content, good quality of audio and video, an option for users to comment and react, reasonable argumentation and valid facts.
