MOOCs IN HIGHER EDUCATION IN KAZAKHSTAN

Annotation

In this study, the authors analyzed the articles by both Russian and international researchers related to the advantages and disadvantages of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) from the point of view of teachers in the U.S. and Russia. The aim of the paper was to study the important aspects related to MOOCs, namely, to assess their impact on the development of soft skills and to analyze the teaching methods that promote the development of these skills. As a result of this analysis, we found that soft skills are well-developed in the educational systems of international MOOCs. Further on, we analyzed the open online courses of the Kazakh National Al-Farabi University and identified their advantages and disadvantages. The study also considered the innovative skills and the research competencies of the residents of Kazakhstan based on the 2018 World Economic Forum report. The facts confirming the need for development and structuring of the MOOCs in Kazakhstan are presented. The study included conducting a questionnaire survey, where the respondents shared their attitudes to open online courses in Kazakhstan. It was found that at present the development of technical capabilities of educational informatization tools is rapid. This enables educational stakeholders to improve their pedagogical competencies in collecting, processing and presenting useful content. The conclusions of the study include identifying the need for development and structuring the MOOCs in Kazakhstan to improve the education quality and to develop the necessary skills and competencies of students. This phenomenon affects the educational quality of the development (forecasting, modeling, designing, constructing, pilot-testing and implementation) of the didactic support in the training of specialists for educational organizations. The MOOC models are quite applicable for professional development of university teachers — as a separate module of the program or as a separate elective course. Such courses can give an impetus to the development of intra-university professional network communities, as well as to the expansion of international contacts of higher education teachers.
