This article presents the results of a study aimed at describing the dynamics of meaningful changes and temporal characteristics of ideas about the expected future from adolescence to early adulthood. The study sample consisted of 1,538 respondents, including 610 boys and 928 girls from 14 to 28 years old (average age — 18.26). The study was conducted using the methodology of I. S. Cohn, the respondents described their ideas about their future in essay letters on the topic “Who will I be in 5 years”. Based on the study, the following changes in ideas about the future have been identified: older adolescents perceive the future as postponed — something that will happen sometime later; in early adolescence, the future is associated with vocational education and ideas about a future family; in late adolescence, the future aligns opportunities and prospects; at the age of youth or early adulthood, the future is focused on the connections between professional activities and creating a family and having children, as well as with self-awareness. Two of these stages (adolescence and late adolescence) demonstrate the understanding of the future in the temporal dimension, while the other two (early adolescence and early adulthood) are the phases which instill future with meanings.
