Modern medical education has seen a major shift from the model of continuous professional education (CPE) to the model of continuous professional development (CPD), particularly noticeable in dental education. This new paradigm integrates advanced educational technologies with a knowledge-driven pedagogical component, complemented by individually tailored scientific and educational pathways for future highly-skilled professionals. A carefully validated analysis shows that CPD embodies the broad spectrum of roles adopted by clinicians and researcher-doctors, including dentists and maxillofacial surgeons. Historians trace the origins of the unified CPE model back to Germany and the U.S. in the early 20th century, but innovative elements emerged earlier in the medical education systems of the Russian Empire and Soviet Union. Meanwhile, the outlines of the CPD model only became clear near the close of the same century. Today, CPD creates an educational environment where competent dentists and maxillofacial surgeons grow their knowledge, refine their skills, acquire expertise, and expand their understanding. The current state and projected evolution of CPD provided the impetus for structuring the training of highly qualified dental and maxillofacial surgery specialists in Russia. For this purpose, pioneering pilot empirical studies were first conducted among different categories of students at the Central Research Institute of Stomatology and Maxillofacial Surgery in 2023–2024.
