The article provides a brief overview of Russian, Kazakh and international (PISA) studies. It allows you to determine the grounds on which the criteria for effective assessment can be based, to identify the potential of such an assessment for the development of students and predict their academic performance, as well as to determine the difficulties that arise when introducing criteria-level assessment in the educational process.
