Annotation
The relevance of the study is due to several factors, the most important of which is the need for a retrospective analysis of the results of studying the phenomenon of motivation as a basis for developing new motivation tools for the production of public goods and education in the context of the digital revolution, the large scale spread of the Internet space and online activity format. The purpose of the theoretical study is to fill in the lack of generalizing information about the phenomenon of motivation, its most important characteristics at different stages of society development. The article presents a theoretical overview of the development of ideas about the phenomenon of motivation throughout the time of its study, from antiquity to the present day, in various fields of scientific knowledge. The article examines the formation of philosophical thought about motivation, its meaning and forms in the works of ancient Greek philosophers such as Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Democritus and Heraclitus. They all considered the human soul, the inner world as a battlefield of good and evil, they thought the task of developing the desire for good and the ability to suppress evil and base motives to be the most important task of educating younger generations, and educating the aspirations of adult members of society to self-improvement as a necessary component of social progress. The article analyzes the transformation of views on motivation within the framework of philosophical concepts that prevailed in the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Enlightenment, and Modern times and gave rise to approaches to motivation that can be conditionally called “spiritual”, “emotional” and “volitional”. The main concepts of motivation theories of modern times in the works of foreign and domestic psychologists are presented and analyzed. The most important practice-oriented direction of studying the phenomenon of motivation and its main achievements, expressed in the creation of diagnostic tools for studying individual characteristics of motivation, are outlined.
