FROM THE RECEPTION OF FICTION TO DESIGNATING ONE’S OWN EMOTIONS (BASED ON WORKS BY STUDENTS OF MOSCOW CITY UNIVERSITY)

Annotation

The article presents the results of the research of how fiction readers designate their emotions creating their own product. Touching upon this topic seems relevant these days because skills associated with the awareness of one’s own emotional state are included into global competence as a component of functional literacy. At the first stage of the research the participants, first to third year students of Moscow City University, read and discussed extracts from contemporary fiction. The fictional characters live in cities and experience emotions, somehow connected with the cities. At the second stage students created their own emotional maps of some cities that they know well. At the third stage students wrote their own texts about city locations that are emotionally important to them. At the fourth stage, the analysis of maps and texts created by students made it possible to outline linguistic and non-linguistic means used by students to designate their emotions. The emotions designated in students’ works have been revealed, as well as types of locations described therein, and topics touched upon. This allowed to draw conclusions on the connection between emotions and city locations through personally meaningful experiences. Assumptions have been made concerning the influence of fiction on one’s own creative writing. The influence displays in the style and the topics of students’ works. The use of fiction and creative reflection exercises in education to designate one’s emotions can become one of the techniques of developing global competences as a part of functional literacy.
