Annotation
The opportunity to choose elective courses at a university provides students with more options for self-realization, broadening horizons and deepening knowledge in accordance with their interests and needs. At present, a fairly extensive amount of theoretical literature has been published, demonstrating special aspects of choosing educational courses in higher educational institutions. However, the choice of elective modules has its own characteristics in each university, the infrastructure of choice is also different, which substantiates the high relevance of the study of domestic experience in these conditions. The choice of elective modules is a situation that Moscow City University’s students face every year. This article is aimed at revealing the features elective modules’ choice by students, analyzing choice factors, and difficulties that may be encountered in the process, and proposals for improving the system of elective modules’ choice. The study of the motives for choosing elective modules was conducted by means of surveying MCU Bachelor students in their 1–3 years of study. The total number of questionnaires filled in by students was 821. Based on the results of the survey, the authors described a structure of the factors for elective modules selection, provided a subjective evaluation of their significance for professional
and personal development, identified students’ challenges in taking informed decisions regarding the choice of modules, conducted a preliminary evaluation of the perception and usefulness of the recommendation system existing at university. The materials presented in this article provide an opportunity to evaluate the process of choosing elective modules and consider the practical proposals for improving the system of electives’ selection so that the students’ choice of elective modules is more equal, informed and appropriate.
