The problem of studying the personal system of value orientations occupies one of the central places in psychology, as well as in related sciences: philosophy and sociology. The system of values determines the relationship of the individual with the people around him, his attitude to reality. Thanks to values, behavior is regulated, the direction of actions and activities as a whole is determined. In this connection, the study of the essence and content of the system of value orientations becomes especially relevant in the current situation of the development of society. The purpose of this theoretical study is: to reveal the essence and content of value orientations n the concepts of domestic and foreign authors. For the study, methods such as the analysis of scientific literature, the study and generalization of the experience and views of various domestic and foreign researchers on value issues were used. In the course of the theoretical analysis, the views of leading classical sociologists were considered: W. Thomas, F. Znaniecki, M. Weber, E. Durkheim; representatives of the biological and psychodynamic approach in psychology: E. Tolman, Z. Freud, E. Fromm; the views of humanistic psychologists, including modern representatives: K. Rogers, G. Allport, A. Maslow, R. Inglehart, D. A. Leontiev, M. S. Yanitsky, V. A. Yadova and etc. Thanks to the analysis, a group of similar phenomena was identified: motivation, needs, attitudes, ideals and beliefs. The specificity of value orientations is revealed: structural, hierarchical and multidimensional. The relationship between values and the behavioral aspect is revealed, the relevance of further empirical research, which consists in the study of specifically related value orientations with the behavioral aspect, is determined.
