Annotation
The relevance of this study on the state of modern engineering education is due to the transformation of the higher education system in the Russian Federation, which is occurring in the context of forming a national educational model after the country’s withdrawal from the Bologna Process. The purpose of the article is to systematise
the results of research into current processes in modern higher education and to search for new solutions to the challenges of engineering education within changing socio-economic conditions. Based on scientific analysis methods, the article presents the experience of implementing the European two-tier system of higher technical education, comprising bachelor’s and master’s degrees. It reflects the prospects for transitioning to a new educational model and the fourth-generation Federal State Educational Standards (FSES). The current experience of participants in a pilot project introducing new didactic approaches to the functioning of the domestic engineering education system is summarised. The results of the study indicate the necessity to both preserve and profoundly rethink the traditions of the theory and practice of Russian higher engineering education. They also emphasise the importance of developing new strategies aimed at maintaining and advancing national
leadership in the field of high technology.
