Abstract. The article presents the results of a study of the main preferences of modern Moscow junior schoolchildren, which were identified by means of a method of assessing the degree of expression of children's interests and tendencies in eight spheres of activity. The material of the article is obtained by empirical survey of interests and tendencies of modern Moscow junior schoolchildren according to the methodology «palette of inte-rests». The aim of the study is to determine the degree of differentiation of the interests of modern Moscow junior schoolchildren, to determine the areas of activity most attractive to them, and to determine the dynamics of children's interests from the first to the fourth grade. The working hypotheses were as follows: the interests of the majority of Moscow junior schoolchildren are clearly expressed and well differentiated; the concentration of interests in certain areas of activity (children, who are interested in «everything», is characteristic of most Moscow junior schoolchildren, in percentage terms, in error); the interest in the communication sphere will be expressed in younger pupils of the fourth grade more clearly than in children of the first and second grades (the graduates of the primary school enter the pre-adolescent period, where social interaction and «communication» gradually take precedence); whether there are differences in the dominant interests of Moscow junior schoolchildren of different sexes (boys and girls). As a result of the data collected as part of the study, the results of descriptive statistics were calculated, both for individual fields of interest and for the schools, classes and sex of the learners. All statistics are represented in the form of a graph «box with moustache», which is able to reflect in a condensed form, without losses, a large amount of data. The scientific and practical value of the material presented lies in its extensive potential for use in the design and purposeful improvement of the teaching process in modern primary schools, as well as in the better targeting of additional education. The diagnostic method we have used is cost-effective, discriminatory and can be used as a support tool to work with younger pupils to correct the content, forms of organization, methods and means of learning.
